Got a Moka Pot and honestly I like my shitty drip machine better. Quicker to brew, easier to clean up and I can't discern any difference in taste. Also I end up with some very fine grounds in my cup when I use the Moka Pot. 3/10 overrated
I got nothing out of the Hoffman americano video Sometimes I make a pseudo espresso and therefore pseudo americano with an aeropress but pour over is just better
>>21995960 >I got nothing out of the Hoffman americano video hes run out of relatable content except for that scale video, that was good. but when he gets too "science-y" it just falls apart
>>21995960 it was a little retarded >sometimes I go to cafes and they don't do drip. the solution is to ask the barista (probably not even the person taking the order) to make hot steam wanded water
>>21995981 if it was for home drip enthusiasts, they'll just make drip without the $1k+ in gear to recreate it mediocrely if it was for baristas trying to appeal to people who prefer drip, there's no way for customers to know a cafe is serving steam-wanded water, those people aren't the current base who order espresso drinks and like them as-is, and they'd more likely just add batch brew to the menu somehow telling baristas they're doing it wrong is the least retarded scenario
>>21995994 >why is this former World Barista Champion turned large roastery owner/leading home brewing youtuber showing people how to improve their espresso based drinks?
>>21996046 I would like to do a blind test to see if the claims about the little hole at the back helping with oxygenation (and thus bringing out more flavor/aroma) are true. I've been enjoying mine for a few months of daily use and love it. There's different sizes, but I got one of the bigger ones (~1 liter).
>>21996063 >Venturi mechanism I don't think so, at least I haven't heard anyone mention that coffee suddenly flowing faster at the narrow part connecting both chambers is doing something to affect flavor—the Chemex also does that. The main difference with the Chemex is that it has both the small hole at the back and the spout connected to the brewing chamber, so you never have the issue of filter paper sticking to the method. As for how the flow of oxygen into the brewing chamber affects the coffee as it is brewing, I have no idea >compare to forcing gas whilst brewing How do you mean?
>>21996082 Like with a bubbler and a pump, or many small concatenated waterfalls and just using gravity, seen some still designs that use the same concept but backwards,

I make cold brew overnight from coarse-ground coffee made from the cheapest whole beans I can source, and then mix it with storebought creamer to take to work. It just werks for me.
>>21995975 baristas watch Hoffman too. if it actually produces better results there's no reason they wouldn't at least try it unless they're working at a shitty chain. >>21995960 the real question is whether steam-wanded water is better for pourover as well.
>>21996948 >the real question is whether steam-wanded water is better for pourover as well. i wonder if you could increase the oxygen content of water by just agitating the hell out of it. when i shake up my half-empty jugs of mineralized water, they seem to get a bunch if bubble but that might not be comparable to the steam wand. is there even a non-industrialized way to measure that? >https://milwaukeeinstruments.com/milwaukee-ma860-galvanic-dissolved-oxygen-probe/ >400 dollarydoos oof. wonder if the hoff would bite the bullet on that one
I just made a pour over that tastes sort of sour... like hot lemon drink. I don't like it. Weird thing is that I used pretty much the same recipe I always do and even the same coffee. It's not specialty coffee but it wasn't bad. I'm not sure I understand what went wrong. Could it have been the coffee itself aging that did it? It was only a few days apart
>>21997031 ...money and boredom? An assertion of existence in an increasingly impersonal world? >>21997049 Are you actually keeping track of your process or are you just spitballing? Coffee won't change very much over the scale of a few days unless it's stored improperly. So it's probably something else unless you're leaving it in an open container on the counter.
>>21997064 Yea I've weighed and timed my shit. I guess I'll try Hoff French Press next to sort of get an idea of what this coffee is supposed to taste like once it's been properly extracted and figure out what I'm doing wrong in the pour over
What temperature should different coffees be brewed at? I've heard the general rule is ~90C for lighter roasts and ~85C for darker because you don't want to burn the cof. But then I see other people advocating for pouring boiling water on top. So I'm confused
>>21997122 i was just fucking with you btw but brew temp is relatively low on the list of importance to how a brew tastes grinder, grind size, dose, pouring technique, water imo matter more like you can start at 100c every brew but change the grind size a couple clicks and have a greater taste difference than starting at 90c
>>21997083 There are plenty of other factors that influence a brew, as anon has pointed out. >>21997122 Just a guess, but that chart's usage of the word fermentation in that context probably just refers to an extended fermentation period compared to more conventional processes.
>>21996948 I think he said in the video that water from a kettle is good, so I think the steamed water is just a convenient way to do it without needing a kettle. With filter you'd be using a kettle anyway, so doubt there's much of a difference if any in taste
>take a sip of coffee in the morning >instantly gotta shit >come back and finish the cup >gotta shit again How do I stop this ahhh I gotta shit so bad and on the train rn
>>21996666 I was looking for reviews of the Makita coffee machine. And his was the pretty much the only one. He is such a soft-handed smug prick about it. Treats it like an absurd novelty. He acts like such a know-it-all, pretends he understands blue-collar worksites and can't imagine a practical use for it. His biggest complaint is battery usage. But, he used the smallest, lowest amp battery they make. Likely because it's the cheapest. And he didn't want to spend more money just to review it. But, anybody even thinking of buying that will already have a full range of Makita tools and batteries. So, it's obviously a non issue. If you understood. He also can't imagine working anywhere where it would be useful. But, like. heaps of trades work out of a van. Or in un-powered site huts. Or rural, way out in some paddock. There's a tonne of practical use for that thing. And he's so smugly dismissive. Even though he's so ignorant. But, I've seen a few of his vids since, and I think he's OK.
>>21998056 >pretends he understands blue-collar worksites and can't imagine a practical use for it He doesn't and makes it pretty obvious that he has no clue about what an actual worksite is like.
>>21998056 Using the drill to grind with the correct battery size was funny. It was also funny to see him having problem articulating if the problem was the 260ml reservoir, using the small battery, or being redpilled completely on the Makita water boiler.
>>21998056 My biggest complaint of that thing is battery usage too. There's only so much energy in 5 or 10 18650s. Continuous duty tools drop tool batteries off like crazy.
I'd rather hit the Bripe or go with a propane hotplate.

>>21999562 I got one of these about 2 years ago, works fine still. Only had to recharge it twice. Only minor downside is the push button mechanism to select the speed is linear so you have to push the button to cycle through low, medium, high, off. The highest speed is really fast and will make a mess everywhere if you aren't careful so keep that in mind. https://www.amazon.com.au/Dallfoll-Rechargeable-Adjustable-Bulletproof-Cappuccino/dp/B07RVLMGQ9
I got this big fucker brand new on clearance for $280, after addressing the design flaw that is the leaky tank with a 2 cent o-ring it makes pretty darn good espresso. I haven't dialed it in completely yet, we'll see if it craps out I've got 30 days to return it.

>>21995324 I love energy drinks and during Lent this year I decided to give them up, to get my caffeine fix I started drinking coffee (which I despised) but, now that Lent is over, I have developed a little bit of a taste for it. I'm an ausfag and so I've just been drinking Lavazza grounds I've made in a plunger but now I'm curious as to what an actually good blend is meant to taste like. I live in Sydney so I'm curious if there's a specific blend anyone would recommend.

y'all got thoughts on my jap coffee? had a few bags of this over the years, it's been consistently good which in the UK is something of a miracle

The Ueshima is from Waitrose, I'm not particularly specialized I just try to find the best I can in my area. How was Japan overall, as a tourist? I hear very mixed things but they seem like an interesting people.
I've used the Kingrinder P0 for a year now. Since it's my first grinder, I have nothing to compare the grind quality against, but have no problems with it. Really wish it was larger though. It sucks having to grind twice just to make a half-litre pot, which I do semi-often.
My one good local roaster that bothers to do a decaf has kiked their prices 80% in less than one year. You guys have any current recommendations? Doesn't need to be single origin, just needs to be competently roasted and not aged out before it even ships, which is the problem with most online decaf even from "reputable" microroasters.
>>22004997 >How was Japan overall, as a tourist? pretty great, id recommend it if the culture interests you ive heard its worse if you have dark skin though
>>22004771 First of all, congratulations! >>21995324 >accidentally choked my DF64 to death by pouring in 150g of beans all at once >cleaned it out, got everything fixed >now my grind settings for espresso increased from a 9 to a 17 Was my DF64 misaligned before I tore it open and put it back together?
>>22007877 yes >choked my DF64 #1 reason i never recommend these grinders cheap yeah but everyone i see online talking about them both the 54 and 64 both gen 1 and 2 say they have horrible chocking/clogging issues that usually require full teardown and cleaning. ive seen some people say there is no problem and that baby sitting your grinder and doing a full clean every week is totally acceptable. crazy
>>22007914 One retard chokes his grinder for every 1000 sold worldwide. The same retards would also choke an SJ by running bags of Starbucks french roast through them.
>>22008216 >grind coffee >clogs yep its totally user error that he didnt wdt and slow feed each bean individually to avoid clogging meanwhile literally any other grinder can grind kilos of dark oily beans all day with no clogging totally user error. DF GRINDERS ARE NEVER AT FAULT
>>22008218 >>22008221 User ran 1/3 of a lb of beans through a (dirty) single doser and clogged it. The grinder is fine. If he had a slow feed disc or wasted money on a cremaloop it wouldn't have happened.
>>22008243 >slow feeders exist therefore every grinder has a secret clogging problem that no one ever talks about i hope df pays you well for this shilling.
>>22008249 >These single dosing grinders using hopper fed burr sets benefit from a controlled feed rate I've got a wug. Why would I need to shill for Zhejiang Feilai?
>>22008254 slow feeders exist to improve taste or to help smooth out the effort required to grind higher density beans they dont exist to stop clogging you can use a slow feeder on a machine that clogs to stop it from clogging but as i said earlier thats a machine issue not a user issue and its not the reason why slow feeders exist. >Why would I need to shill for Zhejiang Feilai? because shilling for cash is less pathetic than shilling for free as an unironic bootlicker.
>>22008260 The grinder(and all grinders) can clog if you're feeding more beans INTO the burrs than coffee grounds are EXITING the burrs. >slow feeders exist to improve taste They do that by limiting the amount of regrinding happening. If grinds can't exit the burrs because there's shit in front slowing everything down, they take a few more spins and generate more breaks and fines. Some people will taste that. >or to help... higher density beans Yes, higher density beans grind slower but feed at the same rate. Exacerbates the clogging and regrinding problem. You know the only thing that helps it? Slowing your feed rate so coffee can exit your burrs without clogging.
having a creamy one with some thicc double creem & brown sugar my brothers. It is the way to go. My schizophrenic mind tells me that the creem is buffering the bean for greater performance, like when you use DLSS to get Raytracing in Cyberpunk
>>22008265 >there's shit in front slowing everything down, the only way this happens is if the grinder is designed badly good grinders dont clog because grinds exit as fast as they are ground df are bad grinders which is why they uniquely have this issue the chinese dont care and dont offer refunds as long as they sell units they are happy. and people like you are allowing them to do that. sell bad products that retards endorse and blame the user if anything bad happens.
>>22008586 MHW3 Bomber R3 is probably the best money spent right now. $120, 48mm, external adjustment, comes with 5 sifting screens, and it fits other 48mm burrs like the Kinu pourover set. Pretty sure it doesn't work with a drill tho if you were going that route. https://mhw3bomber.com/products/mhw-3bomber-precision-r3-manual-coffee-grinder-1
>>22007877 Did you do the dry erase marker alignment process? I have one too, and the alignment is finicky, especially with the rubber mount for the burr. Also, don't forget to check that your indicator dial stayed properly zeroed. It can move around as you turn the burrs if it's touching, and the set screw can wiggle loose a little bit.
>>22007914 My cleaning needs reduced dramatically when I started doing RDT. I think the static screen and probes are doing less than nothing. You get what you pay for. If you're willing to fiddle with it, a DF64 is a nice step up in grind quality from the cheaper options on the market, but it's not as expensive as the "fancy" grinders. I'll probably be replacing it in the next year or two, since I have more money now and it's kind of a nuisance to be messing with it this much. I don't even know what's good right now, though, besides the EG-1, and I'm not able to piss away quite that much money.
>>22008265 >The grinder(and all grinders) can clog if you're feeding more beans INTO the burrs than coffee grounds are EXITING the burrs uh, duh, preventing that is a design consideration for the grinder manufacturers >You know the only thing that helps it? Slowing your feed rate so coffee can exit your burrs without clogging so why don't slow feeding discs come default with the grinder to solve this obvious and universal problem, it's 25 cents worth of sheet metal

>>22007071 Thanks! Setting it up was the hardest part, but it's something I really wanted to do so pushed through by making lots of calls to the government to make sure all above board(may still have mistakes as they make them too when giving directions). Learning to roast has been fun but now that I'm trying a new varietal- I'm seeing how tricky it can really be, may have messed this one up but we shall see, if anything a learning experience, but as you pointed out- an expensive one holy moly the upfront costs are bleak and wholesale/selling to cafe is pretty rough (especially since I'm so small- if I had bigger volumes and guaranteed buyers it'd be more viable) but starting out it's so tricky. Trying to figure out social media to increase sales, and how to make shipping cheaper too now but those eat up an incredible amount of time, and it's not clear what will 'draw' people in to commit to buying a new brand
>>22010951 You don't want boiling water for instant coffee. Even 80c is a bit high. Remember, you aren't using water to brew anything, you're rehydrating the coffee grain, and the heat is only to make it easier to mix, and to provide residual heat for the actual drink. If you only have a kettle, that is a 100c boiling temp which is well beyond, you should set the kettle to start boiling and finish about 10 minutes before you actually need and then pour the water into a cup to let it come down to temp then use it. The best way to make instant coffee is to get a good milk frother/mixer & heater (eg the breville milk cafe, although this is expensive, it's the best, cheaper alternatives exist) that will heat milk up to between 140f (60c) to 160f (70c), some let you pick, so you can experiment. Put in your water & milk, then add the coffee & any sugar and then run the froth/heat cycle.
>>22011001 >he doesn't pour boiling water into a cup then put the cup in the microwave or use a pressure cooker to make superheated water and use that for his instant coffee needs
>>22011204 dispersion plate i guess or lift the moka off the heat to "regulate" it. similar to how they make turkish coffee in hot sand push it in to get a burst of heat then take it out in order to not get too much heat and repeat until finished
>>22011213 1 cup filters I wouldn't go lower than like 15g. Too shallow of a bed and your shit just gets churned and overagitated. >>22011216 This. Low dose drippers exist now like the deep27, sworks dripper, pulsar mini etc.
I'm trying the pourover spoon trick where you pour water onto the spoon instead of coffee and it just drips down. Is it normal for agitation to be literally 0? It's just a pile of clear water by the end.
>>22011269 why not do a double bloom as the first bloom has drained 65% and not reached the sinkhole stage yet or you could swirl your bloom and see if that changes how the post-bloom bed is formed

>>21995324 I'm ashamed to say i've lapsed on my coffee autism for months. Hoffman meme'd me into buying an expensive drip machine and it fucking sucks. I used to get nice cups out of my aeropress but I don't anymore, don't know why. I literally just mix instant coffee into microwaved milk in the mornings now.
Perhaps this is a bit sacrilegious but thoughts on making an actually good coldbrew/iced coffee? It's getting hot out. >just put ice in the coffee Um no I'm not a pleb
Update on the semi auto machine it's working good. Got some cafe umbria running through it, really beats paying $2/shot. Haven't messed with the internal grind settings but the external ones have enough movement that I can get all the grinds I want for my other brew methods.
KitchenAid is discontinuing this machine I believe (tank leak that you can fix with a tight fitting oring) so you should be able to pick it up for super cheap at discount stores. I got mine for $280 vs $599 or whatever KA was charging.
Currently drinking Amazon branded coffee. I was ordering something and saw this so I thought I'd try it.
Is it good? Not really. Just a pretty cheap instant coffee. It's drinkable but that's about it.
I do like instant coffee because it's less hassle than my french press. There are much better brands though of course - even stuff which isn't particularly expensive.
>>22012649 I've tried iced pourover, I quite like it as it usually comes out sweet with the lighter roasts I use. I also make iced Americanos frequently in the summer. For both, I like to use whiskey stones to cool the water and/or brew before adding ice, which reduces dilution. I got some beans from George Howell recently that are apparently specifically roasted for cold brew, so we'll see how that goes.
i just saw little weird hairs floating in my keurig water tank, should i start using one of these "charcoal filter" things? or is that gonna poison me the tap water in my area is also pretty bad
Has anyone else used one of these reproduction coffee mills? I've bought one for the work break room just for French press so that I can bring home my ratio 6 and electric grinder.
>>22013679 >unironically just buy preground That was an idea but because as far I know I'm the only one drinking coffee every other day so beans store better. I'm sure the particle distribution would be even enough for emersion brewing although I'd have to grind finer.
moka cortado :) (robusta is almost here) i got the convex basket working but i haven't had any 1: beans good for espresso 2: beans that are good for espresso and i actually like since i got it so im going to reserve judgment until after i break into the robusta(1-2 week resting period) got some geisha on the way too and Indonesia West Java which i dont think I've had before.
>>22013739 Im pretty sure I told you long ago you were destined for robusta blends like the rest of (loud and proud) australia's cafe scene. Glad the ikape is working out.
