And they always point towards the pelvis. Hope that helps the 2-3 people that are still posting trying to get good.

The site will never recover from the damage monkeyfag and zoomniggers did to it.

Build construct, don't draw with your feelings, this is the way.

I'm the guy who asked the abs question in the last thread, didn't expect it to cause such a shitstorm. Thanks for the replies I guess, here's some constructed midsections from what I understand.

I know, I’m working on proportions. Drawings are from Paul Richer, I’ll post the ref. Something about the way he draws them makes it very difficult to get them on the full page. I posted these last thread bc they’re from a different artist and are easier to understand.
>>
>>7881602
Tell people that the shape of the abs are similar to two balls, the lower ball that connects to the pubis is bigger and it always goes downwards to the pubic area because that's literally to the part it connects. When you draw the pelvis area like a bucket it sort of looks like a dick.

zoomniggers discord chimp out of frustration and ignorance.

It's the beg thread, they will never learn to draw and they don't want you to learn how to draw either. They are only here to shit the thread and tribilize things, they will never learn to draw not sure why they even bother. I honestly think it's malice and not stupidity, no one chimps out like that because they are stupid, or do they? I don't know i had top tier education in a first world country.

It's too late to understand. If you've been here longer than two minutes you'd understand how to shit it has went. It is supposed to resemble a dick in the bottom. Can't you read, fucker?
Do more references. Actually, you know what? Fuck you. I don't have to help you. I'm sick of this shit.
>>
>>7881616
It's just a way to simplify it because the two lower abs are bigger than the rest. I drew a bucket to represent the hips becuase the abs actually curve towards the bottom of the hips but that curve is barely visible in a straight on angle.

Not like it matters, these retards are doomed

You know i'm right. Close the thread faggot, little niglets are not welcomed, at least the retarded zoomers that are never going to make it tried to stand their ground, shame their entire generation was never taught critical thinking, the main thing that's required to learn how to draw.

Everything I draw has something off about it I can't figure out that always comes through when I'm done linearting. orz
>>
>>7881749
Your underlying sketch brush size is too large compared to your linework size, this compounds badly on the finished piece since it accentuates the searching line effect of a sketch on something that's supposed to look finished, that's based on what I can see from your previous work.
There's also something odd going in with her neck, left (viewer's side) shoulder and his back shoulder + arm touching her shoulder (his arm at the back appears larger than the one closer to the viewer too and doesn't seem to connect to the shoulder), you also might want to erase that peek of his ear.
Good stuff though, looks really nice other than the small errors.
>>
>>7881760
Ooh thanks! That will help a lot. Never heard of the "searching line effect".
>>
>>7881763
Out of the top of my head Peter Han should mention this probably at the start of Dynamic Bible (the old version), should probably be in Vol. 2. Other authors mention this too but I forget who would other than Han.
It's a bit different than chicken scratching since it feels more like drawing a large line over and over again until you get something that feels right.

I'm assuming you painted some portions in greyscale with a soft brush, then converted to screentone?
If you want your image to look more like authentic manga, then don't do that. Use a full "sheet" of screentone, and carve it into the shape you want with a hard eraser or using the selection tool.

should i continue with this? now that im nearing the end (only need to refine some things and do the chest/belly/face etc) idk if its a waste of time or not, it is a really experimental piece and i learnt a lot from it

I am sick of copying, it doesnt improve me even if I have gotten rather fast at shitting out copies and the "draw from imagination" meme does not work for me(I cannot focus on drawing while also focusing on keeping an image in my mind, it just doesnt work).

Completing a project is a skill itself, and if you're both having fun and learning, I don't see any reason to stop.
>>
>>7881843
Have a goal. Learn iterative drawing, and the process of memorizing body parts/muscles and its rotations.
First and foremost, you NEED to be able to copy with at least 80% accuracy before you can reliably "construct" things from memory, and you need to have at least a basic understanding of perspective. If you can't copy accurately you won't be able to grab images from your mind and place it on paper without it looking inaccurate in the first place. If you're already satisfied with the accuracy of your copies then move on to construction.

Actually this really sounds like something I could use, do you mind sharing the name?
>>
>>7881914
The one I use is called Screenzen.
Each of my infinitely scrollable apps gets 3 ten minute chunks a day, with a 10 minute cool down between, and a 60 second bootup time before they unlock. It's very customizable
I also keep everything scrollable off my home screen.

Results will vary depending on what kind of person you are. But this setup has pretty much kept me off of things like Twitter completely. I still let myself use 4chan but only for the generals I regularly have pinned.

>rate my heads
The 3/4 one on top lacks the back part of his skull and therefore brain matter, but his face looks like a nigger's, so I guess it's anatomically accurate.
The front face on the right is asymmetrical, but then again many humans are such, and the position of the features / the proportions aren't wrong, so I guess it's passable.
The bottom one and the left one are pretty good.
I give a 6/10.

i've seen you around /ic/ posting you ship plans, they look really cool. Is it for a game?
>>
>>7882082

i used to use 20 pixels per meter (1 pixel = 5x5 centimeters) for all of my ships, but for non-covenant ships i've started to use 25 pixels per meter (1 pixel = 4x4 centimeters). the covenant ships are all increased by 40% to make room for taller species like sangheili and jiralhane, so in practice my covenant ships are all 28 pixels per meter, and i quite like the enhanced detail so i've been trying to scale up my regular ships too.

here's a swatch of my skaven template i took from my foreverial incomplete eliksni sloop. i've fiddled with the HSV and dodge/burn. i redrew some of the wall corners and the shower to have angled walls instead of rounded.

i'll use this as the basis for the skaven ship, which is still being modeled.

That's a solid goal, I have attempted to do the same but sometimes fall out of love with what I'm drawing, and then I go for like a month or two just doing occasional sketches.
And for 12 minutes, that's looking like a great start.

Honestly, now that the book isn't really giving explanations but just showing rough drawings/sketchings, I'm not finding it very useful. I'm thinking of dropping it or skimming through it and moving to another one.

>>
>>7882265
Your accusations are confessions, projections. You call others childish but you have nothing but infantile insults and refuse to think for yourself or look at the world as is, living in an imaginary utopia.
Be that as it may, anon's drawing is crap and I showed why.
>>
>>7882232
The point of copying anatomy books is usually to improve your observational accuracy and give you a better feeling for "proper" anatomy through dozens upon dozens of these copies. That being said if you find it mind numbingly boring feel free to instead copy something you find fun. Pick any drawing you like and try to recreate it. And then do it again and again and again until you can copy with 90%~ accuracy by eye. Or find something else that's both productive to your improvement and personally enjoyable to you. The most important part of doing this hobby is persevering through the dogshit skill level phase without burning out and quitting after all
>>

and ik that feel, inbetween my illustrations i always do some random bullshit paintings and sketches then go back to work on it, taking a few days breaks or whatever; all my illustrations have at least 8 hours on them cus idm taking my time since i like painting way more than drawing but theres still that feeling of "man this looks like dogshit why im wasting my time"

i guess the reason i can still keep with that goal is because i only started taking this more seriously in september and have 0 expectations for myself while keeping ridiculously high standards and consistency, so when things dont look retarded im genuinely surprised and keep going to see how it looks in the end (i give up alot of times tho)

Learn to draw basic forms in perspective. A gear is basically just a flattened cylinder, with another cylinder carved out in the center and boxes or pyramids attached to it. Do drawabox, work through brokendraws free book, do artwod or anything else that teaches perspective, basic form and form manipulation. After that you will be able to deconstruct and reconstruct literally anything.

Focus on effective practice. Do things that will teach you a lot with very little effort. Doing drawings like pic rel would give you a stronger understanding of gesture than what you’re doing now, especially since gesture requires a strong understanding of the underlying structures of the body.

If artists on YouTube are to be believed, yes, it can happen.
Personally, though, it requires connections. Most of them likely had connections that got them the jobs with big companies.
For example, Pikat was able to transition from software engineer to pro artist because she had connections within the company, so she simply jumped from the SFE branch to the concept art branch. She then made a portfolio and more connections there which allowed her to find jobs as an artist in other companies.
Best you can hope for is getting commissions from individuals and getting supported by patreons.

I told you to increase the brightneess. I can't see shit.
I think the man looks fine. If anything you should fix the abdomen which looks further rotated to his right (as in looking to the front) than his upper body.
I can't say it's appealing because you're clearly a homosexual or a woman who's self-inserting as the petite slut getting with a giant and most of the focus is on the man rather than the woman. The man covers three quarters of the image and half of the woman is covered by the man's arm.

Didn't use a reference for this since this was just something I threw together to keep my hands busy while listening to some album recommendations, but I am curious for any pointers regarding my lineart (Although other comments are appreciated). This is actually better than what I usually put out and I'm not sure exactly why (My lineart is usually a bit more wobbly or chicken-scratchy), but I'm still not very satisfied for reasons I can't exactly pinpoint. My lineart usually makes me feel like there's a lump in my throat, but I'm sure that makes no sense whatsoever. (Ignore how her right foot has no toenails, lol, I started coloring before I made this comparison image and I accidentally drew her toenails on the coloring layer and didn't remember until just now)

when something is fully in light, specifically soft forms, it's gonna be softly shaded around the edges, i think they call it half tone, theres nuance to this obviously but just saying that "shading around edges is le bad" is wrong

>>7883296

Oh, yeah, I can see how it's justified to have soft shadows around the edges instead of just fullbrighting it in that case. Especially when there's no dramatic lighting.

I don't want to shit up the thread with the same drawing of mine, but I decided to hit the same pose in the mirror after realizing how much it bugged me (particularly how flat it was), and I saw with the upper torso that the specific "views" (for a lack of a better word) of the upper arm and the tits seemed to be mutually exclusive, so I redlined the lineart a little as a practice (and I was right to do so, since I showed my friend the finished drawing and he asked if she was amputated). I don't plan on touching this drawing anymore, but it felt wrong to leave it at that without my notes, and I would like to see if anyone has any commentary on my redlining.

Started around the beginning of the year and find myself doing nothing but watching tutorials thinking I'll find one that makes sense, drawing basic shapes to practice my hand movement, and tracing over art I like or animals. While I have seen "improvement" in this I still feel like I'm working aimlessly. Any time I try to draw from imagination or even from a reference it feels like any ability I had gained instantly evaporates. Is this normal, should I just continue doing as I am now? Every time I try watching a guide it feels like they have the expectation you can just draw from imagination and that you'll understand their abstract learning ideas immediately.

Having a clear goal helps you focus on what to study and how it applies to what you actually want to draw. Think about what medium, subject matter, style, genre etc. you want to draw. Your goals and taste can change when you get more experience drawing too, so it's not set in stone. With a clear goal to work towards, you can directly apply the principles you are learning to the art you actually want to make. So if you want to draw animals or whatever, after learning about basic shapes, you'd apply that by drawing animals with basic shapes. If you find the subject matter intrinsically motivating to draw and see results from your studying, you'll be able to push through the studying stages.
The introduction in Date Naoto - The Complete Guide to Drawing Manga & Anime is pretty good at explaining the whole learning cycle. Even if you're not interested in drawing anime.

Drawing from imagination is 100x harder so that is normal. Most artists can't draw that well without reference. You have to train that skill specifically, it's hard and takes a long time, so you have to decide if it is worth the investment for you. Since reference is abundant these days, many find that it's not worth it, unless they prefer working without reference. Just 1 or 2 references go a long way, even if they aren't exactly what you are drawing.

Most instructors don't remember what it's like being a complete beginner, they'll contradict themselves and other teachers, assume you know things, suddenly spike the difficulty, etc. It's an art, so things can be a bit wishy-washy. Don't be afraid to switch instructors, many are hit-or-miss depending on your personality and goals. Unless they are teaching you in-person and holding you hand the whole way, you pretty much have to learn how to teach yourself, they just guide you.

Insects. I do like drawing humans and have OCs I want to depict someday, but insects have been the subject I've spent the most time on so far. I worry that maybe humans are a better thing to focus on since there's a lot more readily available resources on them and I wish to learn them down the line anyway. With insects I feel like trying to break them down into shapes is more complicated, body segments aren't too bad but when I get to things like limbs and details I just can't do anything.

I recommend the Morpho series or Anatomy for Sculptors by Uldis Zarins.

It's kind of remarkable how you didn't capture a single element of your ref even slightly. There's no resemblance whatsoever.
Yes you want to do a lot of studies, but try an easier subject first like a small object on your desk. Don't get into complicated scenes yet.

>>
>>7883279
Howdy! I was wondering if you were using a reference for this? I would highly recommend looking up men that appeal to you visiually and try to translate their body types and shapes over in your artwork. You have the basis that shows what you're after, and there are also a few artists out there that share this taste! One artist I am a fan of had did a cool little cheatsheet here. Unsure if ti'll help.

Currently the pectoral muscles lack a definitive roundness to them. It might be something to do with the line down the sternum I'm thinking...
>>
>>7883890
>>7883934

From the looks of it, you do get it. The drawings are flawed but the overall idea is understood. You may not think you’re making progress but these look plenty good. As for the circles changing, I think that has more to do with perspective and overlapping forms, which is discussed more in the book. Just keep drawing.
>>
>>7883739
Very nice work anon, keep it up
>>
>>7883936
>>7883934
There's a skill that can help you with proportions and with placing more accurate lines in your paper, and that is the ability to see hidden shapes within more complex ones.
Do you see that from the point where the forearm touches the kneecap, and all the way to the other shoulder, there is a straight horizontal line?
And the from that shoulder all the way down to where the hand touched the floor there is a straight vertical line?
Extend the line from where the hand touches the floor and you'll find where the heel is planted, then simply extend another line upwards to where the kneecap meets the forearm.
Now you already have a 80% of your figure inscribed into a box, and you can figure out proportions far easier than just eyeballing it. You have a more concrete "Anchor" so to speak. You'll eventually develop this ability more, but for now it is something that you can keep in mind when you're stumped.
>>
>>7883734
Is your Amazonian mommy supposed to have hormonal syndromes and suffer difficulties just walking? Doesn't look like such to me.
Either you fix her head or you drop her healthy-and-strong warrioress looks.
>know the first thing about human proportions
I do know about proportions because I'm studying it, and I don't need to "know" proportions to understand when I'm seeing a disproportional body because as humans we can tell instantly intuitively.
>>
>>7883966
that's pretty cool, I didn't realize those points basically made a square, I'll try and look for those points on other figures, thanks anon.

>you can keep in mind when you're stumped
that's 100% of the time honestly, there's some retard in the back of my mind constantly wondering if I'm copying or drawing the "correct" way or if there's some fundamental error in the way I do things.

>there's some retard in the back of my mind constantly wondering if I'm copying or drawing the "correct" way or if there's some fundamental error in the way I do things
I get ya, and I still do have that in the back of my mind sometimes. But as long as you can identify that what you drew does not match what your mind saw, you're probably on the right track even if you can't name exactly what's wrong with it or if you have little clue on how to fix it. In that way, the retard in our minds is useful because it points out that our artistic skills haven't caught up yet with our observational or imagination skills, and we do need to fail in order to find out how large that gap is.

There's no need to go deep into anatomy so early. Learn about body proportions and maybe take it slow first while drawing. You can even make a cheat sheet to remember how long each part is supposed to be.
>>
>>7883951
thank you so much, i do like that little cheatsheet.
this is the reference, and the character in question i'm drawing is Victor from deadlock. i did draw them more round at first, but victor has them in straight lines so i tried doing it like that instead of giving volume
the chest line does reads really straight, i gave up on the drawing because there were a lot of mistakes; appreciate it regardless, ill keep practicing!

Anyone have any advice for drawing asian eyes, specifically that would be helpful towards drawing them in a stylized manner? Left is how I've been drawing western eyes, right is my best attempt so far at drawing an asian face. Still, I'd prefer if I could communicate that someone isn't white with less lines, it feels too realistic for the style I like drawing in.
>>
>>7884031
what does it look like when you draw white man and woman's face?
>>
>>7884033
White woman on the left, white man on the right. The left image in my first post is a white woman too. I don't draw a lot of men, to be honest, I'm trying to get better about that.
>>
>>7884031
Both of them look asian and it already feels like you're using as few lines as possible but maybe look at traditional Japanese art? The dudes in those are very simplified and very asian.
>>
>>7884041
Will do just that, thanks. I've been doing style studies of Toulouse-Lautrec (pic rel) and trying to understand his economy of lines, but considering that he was super influenced by japanese art it makes sense to study the source as well. Thank you!

i think what's going to have to happen for me to draw digital art is I'm going to have to just draw cute and funny and general anime schlock for a while until I adjust instead of trying to replicate anything that I've been doing traditionally for the past almost 2 years
digital art is just so atmospherically different. I have to go migrate to my other interests if I want to learn it. otherwise it just feels like an imitation of traditional which leads me to a mental stalemate where I just don't do anything at all

Which one of this poses has more "power" to them? I have been blocked on a series of drawings I want to make and none of the things I have come up with have any sort of impact, so I had to reference things directly, and even then Im not convinced about these 2.
What changes would you make?
>>
>>7884181
I'd make more poses. These two aren't doing anything for me personally. Keep making them and surely one will be closer to what you're aiming for.

I'd also use a more tangible line of action.
>>
>>7884140
aww thank you, ill try to continue with it!! ive always wanted to draw a pose like that
that does help! the biggest issue ive noticed with mine were his shoulders from the right that went too ahead, but i see now how i can do the chest better lifting up and moving more to the side.. idk how to word this properly but this def helped me! i like doing snatched waists with huge shoulders so it makes my life harder haha
once again thank you so much, i seriously appreciate it
as for my palette i naturally gravitate towards muted colors/blues so i think it doesn't affect it that much, painting comes much more naturally to me than drawing
>>
>>7884181
I think in the first pose, the impression is that the character is "charging up" and thus the energy isn't there yet, while in the second pose, the character has already "released" and thus the energy isn't there anymore. That's why neither pose has an impression of "power",
Maybe an intermediate pose would be more impactful.

you don't seem to understand that the adult human head is more or less a constant yardstick. If someone's head seems smaller it means you are seeing them from farther away. For your edit to make sense you have to rescale the man's entire body until his head is the same size as the girl's. Then you will percieve the true implied proportion.

Fun and actuation of the things that nobody else is doing. That's all it boils down to. If you don't enjoy drawing or want to get to the point where you enjoy drawing, then just stop. You're wasting your time because there are porn artists out there that will always be better than you and command everyone's attention and subsequently, their money.

But if you enjoy it? Nobody can take that from you. (except people who remove your limbs i guess)

You *are* doing something wrong. If you don't obviously like what you're doing, it can sometimes transfer onto those around you and nobody will give you the time of day for being a grifter (unless you already have talent achieved through enjoying art). The algorithm sometimes chooses people at random but in the end I think the numbers are a cancer.

You're stunting yourself by focusing primarily on it. It's why a lot of non-furries hate drawing furry porn after a while. If there's no desire to do it, it becomes a chore and you might as well pick up wage slave jobs as a "hobby".

I was going to say that you were confusing the serratus with the obliques and the lats (I was making the same mistake at first), but then I noticed that there were two bodies superimposed, so the upper serratus is from the raised-arms body while the lower serratus is from the resting-arms body.
I think if you're just starting to learn anatomy, you shouldn't do this sort of superimposed drawings because you'll get your anatomical knowledge confused.

Same here. I can barely keep my eyes open after work, it’s hard to be creative when I just want to depression nap all night. It feels like my skill is bipolar

I think I need a total dopamine reset. I’ve quit YouTube video essay slop, but now I need to quit podcast slop and listen to nothing but jungle/ambient/breakcore to force drawing to be my copium. I should not have to trick myself into doing the things I like but yet here we are.

It looks good overall.
However, the head leaning forward and tipped down (it looks straight/erect). The right arm / side of torso should be pulled further back and made a bit smaller (due to perspective and proportion), because it looks as if the left arm/side is rotated (like in the reference picture) but the right arm/side is straight and placed more forward than it should, so there's a mismatch.
Other than that, it looks pretty good.
>>
>>7885186
its funny because it was the opposite, a nodraws "advice" got rejected and he and he had a meltdown + multiple anons told him he was wrong

Look at you still samefagging, kek. Get it over it, dude. It has been, what? Three or four days?
You aren't drawing to sell but for your personal satisfaction, so it doesn't matter whether your characters' heads are tiny. You like it that way so it can stay that way.

Do you need validation from others to know you're right? The anon I replied to (>>7885100) agrees that the head is small, and the other anons don't care or just laugh at your tiny head like >>7884228. Your samefagging doesn't count as "anons disagreeing".

Don't be disingenous anon, when i pointed out that the head was "small" I pointed it out in the sense that I thought it helped emphasise the size of the character's body, which is a thing people have done since forever. Don't use me as ammo in your retardation
>>
>>7885293

>>7885296
You still agree it's small, so it's an objective assessment. Both drawings you shared aren't supposed to be proportional (where have you seen fingers or legs like those?) and would look better with proper heads.
Also, in the case of the woman, she's leaning back so from perspective it would of course look smaller (not as small though).
>>
>>7885298
That looks really good.
>>
>>7885300
Thanks, my proportions are still off compared to the photo reference and I gave up on the perspective on the chair (it's a weird looking chair)
I always tell people to look into Krenz's videos on how to accurately copy images. Probably one of the most important things a beginner can learn.

>You still agree it's small, so it's an objective assessment.
That wasn't your intial claim you lying fuck, you specifically told me that that it would look "better" with a larger head. I don't need you to tell me its small relative to the body, we can ALL see that; the main issue here is you insisting it looks bad BECAUSE its small which I clearly disprove with my previous two posts. Anon its clear you don't actually care about giving geniune advice and simply want to be in the right in whatever shitty argument you have going. Also
>Both drawings you shared aren't supposed to be proportional (where have you seen fingers or legs like those?) and would look better with proper heads.
Surprise surprise the dunning krueger /beg/ dweller knows better than actual pros, I'm sure all the greats at vanilliaware and capcom are lining up for anon's lessons. I'd like to believe this is all just bait but considering you've been bickering in this thread for the better part of a week I think you are an actual honest to god retard.

>he looks homosexual,,,,

>>
>>7885306
His left leg looks fucked up to me, which is messing with the foot. Thigh is going one way, but the knee going another. Feet can't rotate much, so they should be in line with the knee in a neutral pose. If the knee points in a direction, the whole leg has rotate at the hips to go with it. I think the overall silhouette is good, so I'd keep the thigh direction and move the knee to face more towards the viewer with the foot pointed more down, rather than off to the side.
>>
>>7885328
Oh! Thanks for the critique. I'll see if I can rotate it. I might've reached a mental block somehow so that'll be fun to overcome.
>>
>>7885311
I've gotten multiple anons here thanking me for giving them advice, critique, and compliments, but here you are with the other anon seething nonstop and having a meltdown.
>these artists work drawing funny cartoons for kids so they can't possibly be wrong
That's like saying famous author Dr Seusse is the same as Shakespeare and anyone who says his writing isn't serious literature is a dunning krueger retard and blah blah blah.
>you've been bickering in this thread for the better part of a week
You're the only one having meltdowns, fag. I've been telling you post after post to drop it but you keep coming with cope after cope. Yes it's small, yes it looks wrong, yes you like it that way. That's all.

thanks! So to be clear, would it be fine if it wasn't trying to look like the ref? As in, if it was just a standalone drawing, could it just be that his torso is squared/facing straight towards the front? Or is it just fucked regardless?
>>7885298
Thanks anon, but I did do this. Maybe I just fucked it up, but yeah I made like a mannequin shape in what I thought was an accurate pose, then filled in details and erased the boxes as I went. Does it not look like I did that? If so, what can I do to do it better in future? I will look at >>7885303

>thanks! So to be clear, would it be fine if it wasn't trying to look like the ref? As in, if it was just a standalone drawing, could it just be that his torso is squared/facing straight towards the front? Or is it just fucked regardless?
You got the right side wrong (his right, from his perspective) and got the left good along with the legs. Only the right side of his torso is squared, the left side is rotated or in the same position as the ref.
The drawing isn't fucked. It's just the right side of his torso and arm that needs fixing.

I tried superimposing them and found out:
>head should be further tipped down
>head should be a bit longer or the hair more voluminous
>shoulders should be lower and right shoulder should be a bit smaller due to perspective
>tit should be lower and smaller
>eye should be smaller
But other than that, it was pretty close. Not too bad for a total beginner, to be honest.
