You probably won't make a lot of money off of it, but you can at least say "I'm a photographer" if you have something self-published out there.
You can also do what I did and feature your work on your friend's blog. Granted I had sex with that friend before her and my professional relationship kicked off, but I'm sure you can manage something like that even without such a context.
