>>98147417 Had some troubles with this one but finally done with the bladeguard veterans leader, also potential proxy for that armageddon shield captain
Starting my face training arc. I've got like 12 space marine heads all ready to go so hopefully between these two and the last I see a noticeable improvement. How do they look? I primarily used Bugman's Glow mixed with increasing amounts of AK Basic Skin. Before this I'm pretty sure my other faces were just contrast maybe with some highlights. I'm following Duncan's face video so I can hopefully work up to Vince's.
First time I've painted since I was maybe 14, so give or take 20 years. How did I do? Obviously, bases still needs doing, and I could maybe highlight another edge or two, but the models are basically done
>>98147804 Brutal, heavy , tight >>98147665 My favourite space marines on /tg/! Looking sick as usual. are they third party models / 3d prints ? I'm out of the loop
I tried speedpainting the entire squad. The green armor and darkblue undersuit aren't as distinct as I wanted them to be. but I think they turned out pretty good. I also didn't include the shoulder armor panel, it's just too big and I dont' think it looks good.
>>98148441 the highlighting of the blue triangle is a lot more prominent than the highlighting of the red triangle, giving it a visual asymmetry that is distracting.
>>98148947 the term speedpainting is not synonymous with the product line of speed paints, which are a kind of contrast paint, contrast paints being much newer than the varied techniques which the term speed painting encompasses. Speed painting being a technique makes a distinction from the use of contrast paints which are meant to preclude the use of any technique. If you are following the use of contrast paints with drybrushing or other methods then it falls under speed painting. While that seems odd in that it adds time to the process, speed painting is a developed skill, not just the act of putting paint on fast.
>>98148993 Oh yeah I agree now you put it that way. Contrast paints and Speedpaints are a tool to be used in speed painting , just contrast over primer is something else. Speaking of, green contrast is on. Black gonna cover the ugly layer lines on the printed bits.
>>98148993 Speed painting is just the act of painting really fast. Contrast paints or AP speed paints are a great way to speed paint when it comes to miniatures.
>>98149110 it is a loosely defined category because many different techniques are caught under the umbrella, the thing that unites them all is that they are all learned techniques and dipping has never been counted amongst them, so while slapchop counts, just putting pure contrast overtop a uniform light primer doesn't, the distance between those two is short, but it makes the line clear.
>>98149138 I'm not writing the rules, I'm observing the consistent pattern of everything that has been collectively referred to as speed painting over the years, and it is a step beyond just applying paint fast.
>>98149150 If photobashing is considered a speed painting technique, I don't see why contrast paints wouldn't be. There's nothing in the definition that would exclude them, you're just making baseless claims.
>>98149435 I don't give a shit about your personal opinions, it's considered painting and speed painting is a large part of concept art. >>98149445 Even the wikipedia article on speed painting talks about digital painting, it's the common conception. Feel free to disagree, but again, your personal opinion is not interesting to me.
>>98149424 even the anon who painted the miniatures that started this chain looked at other anons explanation and said "this logic makes sense and I agree with it" so why the fuck are you carrying this, much less so far as outside the scope of miniatures and paint?
>>98148671 Looks cool. Have you ever had any issue playing games with non GW models? I'm going to start playing & I heard the local club doesn't give a shit about recasts, 3d prints etc, but still curious what would actually happen if I brang prints/proxies or 3rd party models to an "official / games workshop" event.
>>98149469 Because he's wrong. >>98149477 Every other source I can find says speed painting is primarily done digital. My point is that "even" mainstream sites like wikipedia agree.
>>98149502 Why would I care what you want in relation to what I post? Also why would you care about what I post? Just move on with your impotent rage gramps.
>>98149466 Do... you legitimately have autism and schizophrenia? What does concept art, digital painting, photographic collage have to do with miniature painting techniques? You seem like you are in the midst of a brain injury.
>>98149507 >YOU AREN'T ALLOWED TO CRITICIZE LOW EFFORT SCREENSHOTS OF AI Retards like you are killing this board. Nobody comes here to talk to chatgpt.
>>98149506 >>98149466 >Even the wikipedia article on speed painting talks about digital painting wait anon, can I now paint my models with my computer software? Do I plug in some kind of robot arm that holds the brush and follows my instructions? Sounds kind of incredible.
>>98149521 lmao wtf are you talking about gramps? Did I make you start talking to chatGPT? That screenshot wasn't from chatGPT lol holy fuck you're old and retarded
>>98149513 >>98149527 Speed painting is a term that applies to all of those. It's the use of techniques to speed up the process of painting. Among those techniques are things like photobashing and stenciling, so I don't see how one could argue that contrast paints don't count.
>>98149524 Yes. >prime >base coat with your shadow color >hit the upward facing areas with your mid tone >hit the extremes of the mid tone with your highlight >touch up the shadows again if necessary >touch up the highlights if necessary >using a brush, base and paint details and other parts that aren't your main color >using a brush, edge highlight only in select places where it's important (e.g. around the head) >hit the model with some gloss varnish >oil wash (you can experiment with different colors here) >matte varnish And you're done.
>>98149539 We are talking about conventional terminology relating to miniature painting techniques. I think the sentiment of the anon objecting to the tau is that they don't meet a standard (based on vibes ) . The vibe is attacking contrast sloppa and the other poster is coping about his models looking unfinished. Or something
>>98149553 Dude is on crack. "Contrast paint" (which is GW's brand name for it) is almost synonymous with the concept of speed painting to the point that a prominent distributor of such paints calls their line "speed paints".
>>98149553 Speed painting is a universal concept, but even if we narrow the argument to miniatures, I don't see how contrast paint, which is explicitly made to speed up the process, would be excluded. And I dislike contrast paint, so I'm not trying to defend or elevate it or whatever.
>>98149636 >nonlocal video gen already shuttered >grok paywalled because it was hemmorrhaging >no AI company profitable STILL >disney backing out of deals with AI companies >microsoft and several other major companies pulling the breaks on AI because their costs are so high compared to their inefficiencies
>>98149649 Only for a few specific paints I’d say. Vallejo is bretty good and my main workhorse brand. Their stuff is all at least decent in my experience
Ok but it's still everywhere and it's used every second of every day and it's not gonna stop regardless of profits.
>nonlocal video gen already shuttered no usecase for ai video gen for most people >grok paywalled because it was hemmorrhaging So? >no AI company profitable STILL So how are they continuing to exist? >disney backing out of deals with AI companies No usecase for AI+Disney >microsoft and several other major companies pulling the breaks on AI because their costs are so high compared to their inefficiencies Jeet mismanagement & so?
>>98149649 Yes, you are missing out on some of the greatest paints in human history. The hobby is made by first worlders, for first worlders. You don't belong.
>>98149662 >so how are they continuing to exist A lot of people invested a lot of money in shares for these companies and are desperate not to see the bubble burst. Why do you think companies try to enforce mandatory AI use, despite Claude being identified as a massive liability? Anyway, last off topic post from me. Enjoy shouting "gramps" from the retirement home.
>>98149649 They're nice to have, but I really don't think there's any one specific paint brand that's essential. I have paints from those other brands you listed and still use Vallejo alongside them.
>>98149649 i'm really liking the pro acryl paints i have so far and i will be buying more of them, probably exclusively, going forward. most of my current paints are vallejo so yes i do think you're missing out. can't you just buy amazon prime for a month to take advantage of the free shipping or are you in such a shit hole that big jeff doesn't bless you with such privileges?
>>98150138 >can't you just buy amazon prime for a month to take advantage of the free shipping or are you in such a shit hole that big jeff doesn't bless you with such privileges? Sure, but I don’t want to buy it online. It feels weird, and it makes me feel like I need every color possible. Also there’s no amazon free shipping here, and for some reason every paint brand other than Vallejo costs three times its original price, especially Citadel and AP
Shit lighting for my picture, I'm aware. I'm trying to get a scheme down for my Numenorean's. basically just following the standard but I don't like how the trim of the tabard looks. I'd like to go more like how GW paint the spearmen's (picture on the right) but I can't work out the colour. What colour is that and how can I achieve it without mixing?
>>98150170 1st take a picture with better lighting because it’s impossible to see what actual colour the trim is 2nd if you don’t want to mix at all you’re going to get nowhere at all (most probable since you’re too retarded to use your eyes)
>>98148163 the contrast looks good and good job on the eyes, but they're very monotone beige. pale skin has pinks, yellows and blues that make it look more alive. try adding some blush to the cheeks and lips, jaundice to the boney bits, and some five o'clock shadow for the next steps
>>98150442 He was still heavily into the hobby and his art right up til his death, playing and designing games. I always find it inspirational when an artist does something right up til their death, it proves they were in love with it and shows there is no age too old to do something you love. Very inspirational. RIP, I'll have a sip of paintwater and pour another one out for the bro JB
>be me >retarded >going insane because i bought some colours basing my choices on the stahly chart and my paints look NOTHING like the swatches >its impossible all the pots are bad ones >fiddle with the monitor >'huh whats this' (sRGB) >turn it on >paint swatches now look exactly like the real thing
>>98151383 Suggs actually worked with him and visited him after he retired so I at least understand if she makes one. For anyone else it will just be "oh but i liked his art!"
>>98151396 >he was so influential >i loved his job so much >so inspirational i started painting minis because of him >truly a legend >i always aspired to paint in his famous style >his legacy will live on (all these people learned about his existence because of the AP paints released not long ago)
>>98150442 >>98151396 Yeah, but I *did* like his art. He put the handsomest and most heroic Space Marine chapter in the galaxy on the cover of the Second Edition boxed set!
This picture of him as a clean-cut youngster in a fashionable denim jacket is circa 1986.
How do I glue small resin kits without gluing my hands as well? It's a pain in the ass with normal superglues. Is there a specific model or brand better for precise steps?
>>98152365 You can get the bottles with the tiny nozzles or pour the super glue onto something like a bottle cap, then use a needle tip or a dentist's tool to apply small amounts directly to the part.
>>98152365 I paid extra for those CA bottles with tiny brush and never looked back, it's simply too convenient. Much easier to avoid applying too much at once.
Today I was using my previous, Polish/Chinese airbrush solely for applying varnish (now serving solely for primer and varnish role after I got H&S Evolution) and I want to admit something. I was standing firm on stance that "airbrush is airbrush, no point in paying extra when so called middle class Chinese model is good enough" and don't get me wrong, it is still serving me right and is perfectly usable for normal painting/shading/etc as well. But there are some small things, some small details that makes H&S simply much more comfortable in use and cleaning. By all means, I don't regret starting with little more simple (and standard screw nozzle) Chinese model and I guess that it is more reasonable for starting users to get something they won't regret too much breaking but I also understand why people recommend getting H&S or Iwata right off the bat.
>>98152575 I wasn't involved in this entire airbrush debate, but it takes a man to admit he was wrong. Especially in the sperg central that is 4chan. Solid fucking form, anon.
Only been painting a few months and I've got kind of a strange mix of paints right now. I feel like every time I've looked up what paints people recommend it's always some vague "Just buy what you need" answer but based on what I've got here are there some essentials I should think about adding?
This shit is so fucking tiresome. I hardly use this, and now the cap is completely warped for no reason. Turned it inside out and full cleaned and still doing it. Wasn't there a rumor that GW was moving to droppers, so they cam look like an actual company that wants to have shit people will buy.
>>98153357 I highly recommend getting some chinesium droppers(they're really cheap) and transferring your GW paints. Those fucking pots are an actual insult to the customer.
>>98153308 Not really anon, it depends on what you're painting and what scheme you want. I could say you don't have any purple, but what if you don't paint anything purple?
>>98147947 sucked up by the air-compressor vent? Maybe a crumb of bluetack fell off your shirt while brushing with the lid off? Pretty strange though, to be sure. That shit could've gunked it up good.
>>98151443 >>98151396 The best way to honor him is to do a miniature and raise a glass. Anyone who actually paints or converts something for him to go with the sad video is not a fag. I'm pulling a couple things that were on the perpetual Shame Pile and putting them back on the bench.
>>98152013 Honestly you got that pretty well, especially the non-continuous border on their spots. Most people fuck that up.
>>98153925 Thank you, I did use an actual snow leopard as photo reference, too bad I could only find decent smilodon big cats for the sculpt and not good leopard sculpts, the heads and tails are all wrong.
>>98153486 I would've gone with a different plasma color since it kinda blends into the turquoise armor but I can't deny that glow effect is immaculate
Tips for painting hard rubber on minis? Im not trying to paint wheels (yet) But Im trying to get the texture and shine right for a model cover in rubber armor.
I've gathered up a secondary muhreen force from all the halves of starter sets, deals and such. Something I can use to play with someone who doesn't have any when they come over. Not exactly motivated to paint it, what's the best scheme or colors for armor that need the least steps to look decent? I would just do something metallic all over, silver with a wash and drybrush would be a breeze, but my main army is Necrons, so that's too similar.
>>98155151 I have some Guardians of the Covenant that were very speedy job, but they also have the option of extra gubbins if you ever feel like painting a fancy marine. You could also make them Iron Hands, black primer, light drybrush of silver, light grey gun casings and you're basically done. Great if you have spare AdMech decals lying around too.
Anyone done ERA before? I'm just making it out of plasticard but it looks pretty shitty. I'm probably just gonna see if I can buy a box of 100 somewhere or find a free stl and have my neighbor print some off.
>>98154232 I was considering doing orange plasma and glow at first but I don't have it anywhere else in the scheme so I defaulted to jade/mint. I think it stands out fairly well, that picture is pretty awful since I'm not at my place and don't have access to a proper lighting setup.
>>98155231 Yes, many times. You can get Kontakt-1 ERA bricks (the iconic, old soviet ones) in 1/35 scale from Ryefield models. These are plastic, and there are like 400 of them in the box. They fit warhammer vehicles perfectly. But there are STLs files for pretty much all kinds of reactive armor on the internet.
>>98155971 oh hey you reverted the feather colors back to real macaw. Cool. Looking like it's turning out just fine. I'd suggest doing the mustachio that you haven't installed yet in yellow. That should tie the look together.
The WGA mounted knight isn't nearly as crisp as similar models made by Victrix. However, they've one important edge design-wise: separate part for reins, which was very useful for this project. Next thing I'll start doing are straps for the croupier and thinking of best shape for the peytrals, if they are to be of crescent shape or just laminated strips.
>>98156392 >Have like 90 brand new Vallejo bottles >Haven’t cracked open a single one, still using cheap Mont Marte craft paints >Have three airbrushes: cheap chinesium, Creos ps270, and H&S Evolution >Keep using the cheap chinesium cause I’m scared I’ll bugger the expensive ones >Have 5 Kolinsky brushes >Never use them because I’m afraid I’ll fuck them up haha...
I, however, moved from Chinese airbrush to H&S eventually and want to say that these are more sturdy than you think. And ultimately they are still tools that will wear down from use but at least H&S are modular and honestly designed to minimise risks (like how Chinese trigger can easily move out when there is no needle to hold it in place, potentially denting needle when you try to place it in and it hit the trigger mechanism - H&S ones are unlikely to poop out on their own without needle and as such are safer).
>>98156600 Technically, I'm still not one because I don't have wife and kids (never will have one as I'm 36 already and with zero social experience).
>>98156711 >there's a very solid chance you get your balls clipped away >mares are usually kept away from you >have to engage daily with the most retarded, histrionic women on the planet (horsegirls) >be deathly afraid of rubber snakes or anything snake-shaped, no matter how silly >someone opens an umbrella next to you: panic >someone makes a loud sound next to you: panic >someone waves a flag or similar object: panic >the only solution to all potential problems is running away It ain't all roses and sunshine.
>>98156581 if $60 is enough to have you stressing you're not financially secure enough to be starting this hobby. that's what i paid for dinner and beer last night
today i was mowing my lawn thinking how happy i am now that all my backlog is done for tomorrow i will wake up 4am like always and have nothing to do for 2 hours until i go to work life sure is great when you dont have to complain or think about about youre backlog amirite
>>98157057 you have gotten much better along the years and i like your stuff finnanon but for the life of me i cant remember what are these for bretonnia maybe
For multiple systems. I thought of actually using them as freeguild cavaliers for AoS, but they can be easily used in TOW, kings of war, dragon rampant, hobgoblin or OPR as well.
>>98157128 i visited tokmanni yesterday to buy more maston primer and thought of you when looking trough their tape shelves very nice and good luck anon
>>98157154 >tokmanni Had to google that. Looks like it's the Finnish version of Target. How neat to get a window into another part of the world apart from Burgerland, and all through the magic of WIP!
>>98157195 Reminds me how I once mentioned using "camo" masking putty on /m/ and finding it very useful, only to have someone asking "why didn't you just get silly putty" and I had to search to find out what the hell it was. Turns out it's some local US product for kids.
>>98148163 Your eyes are really clean for just starting, I’d say never have them pointed forward though, always pick something they’re looking left or right at, it looks better in miniature. Also advanced level tip, both for eye direction and head direction, if you look at stage acting and television, the actors whenever looking at something turn their gaze slightly toward the audience, so looking at someone in the eye, they actually look over their shoulder that’s facing the audience. Also I’d think down your washes even more, definitely add a little bit of flow improver with the distilled water to fight pooling like you were getting there. Gives you more time to push the wash to the sides, and makes it very thin so you can get multiple coats as you see fit. Really good highlighting on the chin/nose/foreheads too
>>98157311 >>98157338 Thanks, anons! Hopefully I'll have time for oils and weathering tomorrow then I just have an AT gun with crew left to finish before switching to Germans.
>>98157293 I've done some faces before on a couple of marine squads. But those were just a slap of contrast and doing the eyes pretty much. But thanks. The most recent faces I've done were vampires so I'm trying to learn to actually paint some living models.
>>98157683 Yep, it's in BL books a fair few times with marines activating power fields to clean their weapons. Fair point the hilts should probably have some mind!
>>98157678 Sculpted, it's the banner from the Victrix Honour Guard kit. Massive pain in the ass to paint to be fair.
Can I get some specific hobby knife recommendations? I’ve looked at knives and I’m wondering about quality and longevity of the product. I’ve also been a bit weirded out that there a lot of knives with the twisting chuck near the blade instead of at the back. Is the solution to put the cap on then loosen or tighten the blade to minimize accidental cutting?
>>98157982 Thanks! >>98158108 I’ve been interested in the gripster x acto knife. The mechanism at the back and the antiroll thing. And also the autism of stls that exist to replace the cap if I lose it. My problem is the grip has a brand on it and like clothes I don’t like wearing clothes that are just brand name designs on it. If there is a Chinese copy (hopefully just as good) without the brand name I’d love suggestions.
